StreetNet: making our streets stronger together

According to the 2021 Australia Talks National Survey, 62 per cent of Australians know many of their neighbours by name.

Fifty-five per cent of people in inner metropolitan areas agreed they knew many of their neighbours, compared with around 70 per cent in rural and regional areas.

A third overall said they did not know their neighbours' names at all.

As social psychologist and researcher Hugh Mackay recently told the ABC, being a good neighbour can give meaning to people's lives.

"Once the connections are made, people start to feel as if they belong in their own streets," he said.

StreetNet is a project designed by the Hedland Collective and Newman Futures initiatives to build that sense of belonging and connection through supportive networks created between people living on the same street.

The initiative incentivises street gatherings in the Pilbara towns of Hedland and Newman as a way for residents to connect with their neighbours, form close-knit relationships and craft a vibrant sense of community within their suburbs.

Your StreetNet event could be a neighbourly get-together hosted on your verge, front yard or local park, a bake off or a Christmas light competition.

There are a raft of free StreetNet resources available at or including a getting started pack, a guide to a great door knock, safety information and handy street party invitations to help you host your StreetNet event.

You’ll also be able to find or add to your local Neighbourhood Map - an interactive digital record where you can share local hidden gems from sunset spots to walking trails, or even your local street library with others living in your community. Why not contribute to the map, and help your neighours discover the things you love about your neighbourhood!

To get started, just join StreetNet by filling out the form at or, download the getting started pack, and follow the prompts to organise a front yard StreetNet event with your neighbours.
