Jury Art Prize

The Jury Art Prize is a highlight of the cultural year in Hedland, and the call is out now for artist submissions for the showcase of Western Australian art which has a prize pool of $30,000.

The event, managed by The Junction Co, will be on show from 11 June – 30 July 2021 at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio in Port Hedland.

The Junction Co executive officer Katie Evans said the Jury Art Prize was an opportunity for regional artists to be celebrated in a prestigious competition.

“The exhibition celebrates artists who live in regional Western Australia, and draws entries from across the State’s regions,” Katie said. “But this does not mean that there is any reduction in quality.

“We are providing a platform for very high quality work from some of the State’s best artists.”

She said local art held up well in the 2020 competition, with a high proportion of Pilbara artists and Aboriginal artists represented in the final selection.

The exhibition is open to artists working in all artistic mediums, including painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture and digital art.

Katie said the Jury Art Prize also offered innovative ways for people to see the artworks even if they can’t make it to Hedland. The exhibition is presented in a walk-through online gallery, which is a replica of the actual gallery, with high quality images of the art on the virtual walls.

This enables people anywhere in the world to see the exhibition, as well as vote for their favourite.

And in 2020, when the COVID-19 restrictions disrupted so many events, the opening night of the Jury Art Prize was staged as a drive-in event, which allowed more than 200 patrons in almost 150 cars to view the finalists projected larger than life on the side of local landmarks such as apartment blocks and fuel tanks.

Prizes are awarded in four categories – the Judges’ Prize ($10,000), Kathy Donnelly Award ($3,000), Patron Award ($3,000 scholarship for a Hedland artist) and Jury Prize for the people’s choice ($10,000). Winners will be announced at the official opening of the exhibition on Friday 11 June, with the exception of the Jury Prize, which is announced on Friday 23 July.

There is a submission fee of $30+GST to enter. Submissions close on Tuesday 4 May.
